The Gelängebachtal nature reserve with a size of 96.17  hectares is located to the west and southwest of Medebach . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2003 with the Medebach landscape plan. The NSG is part of the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht (DE-4717-401). The NSG also belongs to the FFH area of the Glindfeld-Orketal forest reserve .

Area description

In the NSG it is the grassland on the Gelängebach . The Gelängebach is naturally formed and accompanied by wood on the banks. The stream flows through a grassland valley with predominantly moderately moist to moist oat meadows, ryegrass-white clover and red fescue-ostrich grass pastures. Wet marsh marigold meadows, spring swamps and large sedge groves can be found in places. The valley and the edge of the flat slope areas in the NSG have an extremely differentiated grassland complex with numerous rare and endangered plant species.

The Gelängebach valley, together with the Brühne and Orketal valleys, is an outstanding refuge in terms of nature conservation for communities of the wet and wet grassland in the center of the natural area of the Medebach Bay.

In the NSG there are the now very rare oat and meadow button Silgenwiesen.

The red-backed shrike and gray shrike breed in the area , character species of the bird sanctuary "Medebacher Bucht". The NSG is the center of the great gray shrike distribution within this natural area.

Protection purpose

The NSG is intended to preserve an outstanding grassland-biotope complex for numerous endangered plant species and their socialization and to secure and ecological development of habitat structures for the shrike species (great gray shrike, red-backed shrike) as reference species in the bird sanctuary "Medebacher Bucht". As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
