The nature reserve The alder with a size of 35.08  hectares is located west of Medebach . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2003 with the Medebach landscape plan. The NSG is part of the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht (DE-4717-401). In the east, the NSG borders directly on the settlement area of ​​Medebach. The NSG is surrounded in the west and north by the nature reserve Medebacher Kernraum: Spring troughs, lowlands and flat slopes . In the south, the Medebach nature reserve is partially adjacent. Landstrasse 740 and Kreisstrasse 56 separate two areas from the main part of the NSG.

Area description

In the NSG it concerns the grassland lowland Die Erlen with the Medebach . In the grassland there are poor pastures and wet meadows. Most of the grassland is legally protected biotopes in accordance with Section 30 of the BNatSchG . Meadow and hedge breeders such as skylark and red- backed shrimp breed in the NSG .

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the grassland with its species inventory. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
