The nature reserve Medebacher Heide with a size of 6.41  ha is located northeast of Berge in the urban area of Medebach . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2003 with the Medebach landscape plan. The NSG is part of the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht . The NSG also belongs to the FFH area of the Glindfeld-Orketal forest reserve .

Area description

The NSG is an old heather area with juniper trees . The heather belongs to the Calluno genistion. Endangered plant species occur in the NSG. WieVorkommen of Rockrose , Heidenelke , autumn crocus , vulgar Wundklee , Hemlock , Saathohlzahn and Nick Campion ends . Reversible necks, great gray shrike, blackcatcher, gray woodpecker and red-backed shrike breed.

In the winter of 1983/84, the heather area was cleared of unwanted trees during a work assignment by the Association for Nature and Bird Protection in the Hochsauerlandkreis and is being grazed extensively by a flock of sheep. There are many individual pines on the heavily grassed broom heather area. Common heather only occurs rarely and is localized. Broom, on the other hand, is often scattered.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the heather area with its species inventory. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
