Berge is a district of Medebach in the Hochsauerlandkreis , North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

With 126 inhabitants, the place is the smallest district of Medebach. It lies at an altitude of 380 to 472 meters. In addition to the village itself, the hamlet of Ronninghausen also belongs to the village .

history

Berge was mentioned in documents from Corvey Abbey dating back to 1126. In the following centuries it was also mentioned in the registers of property of the regional nobility. Berge was mentioned both in 1313 and 1338 in the records of the Counts of Arnsberg . Roninghausen appears in 1362 and 1467 in the property registers of the Glindfeld monastery . In 1684 the monastery owned, among other things, the lowest estate , which later became private property.

When the US Army reached the area around Medebach towards the end of the Second World War , Berge was only explored by US soldiers from March 29 to April 1, 1945 and not occupied. On April 2, the village was searched. On April 3, an artillery detachment took up position near Berge and fired at German troops in the west. On April 4, the US troops moved on.

In the Second World War ten soldiers , nine of them on the Eastern Front , died as soldiers.

On July 1, 1969, Berge was incorporated into Medebach.

Even today, mountains are largely characterized by agriculture. Tourism also plays a role.

nature

The place is located in the Medebach Bay , which has strict species and environmental protection requirements, and has a large variety of fauna and flora. The numerous species of birds are particularly remarkable.

Attractions

The entrance side of the St. John Evangelist Church

The baroque church of St. Johannes Evangelist from 1699 is well worth seeing. It contains the images of the apostles from the former Glindfeld monastery. There is still a community bakery in the village where bread is baked regularly. The oldest house in town is the half-timbered house Klüppel from 1790. In the museum barn, relics of the past, especially from everyday farming, are exhibited.
