history

St. Antonius Oberschledorn.jpg

Oberschledorn was first mentioned in a document in 1236 as the residence of the knight Herm de Sledere . At that time the place belonged to the Free County and Parish Düdinghausen. On May 17, 1890, the village was affected by a great fire, 21 families with 129 people were made homeless. The St. Antonius Church was solemnly designated on May 21, 1896, the previous building was also destroyed in the fire in 1890. Figures of St. Anthony and St. Agatha and a monstrance from the 18th century have survived from the old church. In December 1902, the Steinhelle – Medebach small railway began operations in Oberschledorn.

Shortly before the end of World War II, 71 prisoners of war from the Soviet Union, who were transported from more western areas, were housed in the village. On April 29th and 30th, hundreds of tanks and other US Army vehicles drove north through the village. The residents of the military training camp in Oberschledorn were taken prisoner on March 29th. The village itself was occupied on April 1st. A battery of guns was positioned to the north and south. These shelled the area around Küstelberg, where German troops were staying. The Wehrmacht only shot three grenades into the village, which had no effect. At that time a German soldier fell in the forest around the village and was buried in the village cemetery. After two weeks, the US troops withdrew. In the Second World War, 27 Oberschledorns died as soldiers , mostly on the Eastern Front .

The narrow-gauge railway ceased operations on June 23, 1953. Since July 1, 1969 the village has been part of the city of Medebach .

On September 4, 2007, Oberschledorn hit the media headlines because three Islamist terrorists were arrested by the police there. The press called them the " terror bombers from the Sauerland ", as they were accused of preparing explosives attacks.
