Smygehuk Lime Kiln; detail

The lime kilns of Smygehamn ( Swedish Kalkugnarna i Smygehamn ) is located in Smygehamn in the municipality of Trelleborg in Skåne . The oldest surviving lime kiln in Sweden dates from the middle of the 19th century and was built by the German builder Herman Wendt. This lime kiln is located between the Köpmansmagasinet warehouse and the port of Smygehuk .

In 1819 the Swedish naturalist Sven Nilsson (1787-1883) was in Östra Torp (Smygehamn from 1950) and noted in his notes that the lime kiln there was built around 1803 and during this time about 300 barrels of lime were burned for local needs per year were. By 1890 there were already five lime mills. The Jordberga sockerbruk company acquired the so-called Wendt'schen Hof in 1891. After some investments, it mined limestone on a large scale with around 50 employees for its own use. The limestone mining was near the beach. So that the pits could be connected to the sea so that they could later be used as a harbor, they went very deep into the rock. One of these mining areas later became the port at Smygehuk. Today this is one of the three ports in Trelleborg Municipality . The former fishing village was able to develop into an industrial center over time due to the limestone quarries. By 1939 the lime industry was booming and employed around 100 workers. After the Second World War, lime burning declined noticeably until the mining and production of lime was stopped in 1954.

Up to ten ovens were used north of Smygehuk in what was then Östra Torp. Eight of these were refurbished based on historical models, the oldest of which was built in the 1850s. The lime kilns there, to the east of the church of Östra Torp , have chimneys and domes painted white.
