Sven Nilsson (born March 8, 1787 at Alfastorp farm near Landskrona , † November 30, 1883 in Lund ) was a Swedish naturalist .

Life

Nilsson studied at Lund University from 1806 and graduated in 1811 with the fil. like. from. In 1812 he was appointed teacher of natural history with the work De variis mammalia disponendi modis . In 1819 he became director of the zoological museum in Lund, investigated the fisheries in Bohuslän and Norway , took over the supervision of the zoological museum in Stockholm in 1828 , but returned to Lund in 1832 as professor of zoology and director of the museum. In 1838 he received the pastorate in the Församling Nöbbelöf (today Nöbbelöv in the municipality of Skurup ) as a prebende .

Nilsson devoted part of his research to ichthyology , on which he published three works. 1838–1843 he wrote the Skandinaviska Nordens urinvånare , which has also been translated into German and English and is considered a fundamental work on Norse archeology.

In 1821 Nilsson became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , in 1841 of the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies . In 1822 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . He also belonged to various foreign companies. From 1845 to 1846 he was rector of Lund University and from 1856 lived as an emeritus in Stockholm.
