The Hardt nature reserve with a size of 7.72  hectares is located east of Düdinghausen in the city of Medebach . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2003 with the Medebach landscape plan. The NSG is part of the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht .

Area description

The nature reserve is a forest area with red beeches and oaks on the southwest slope of the Hardt mountain. Former coppice mainly made up of beech and sessile oak . The beeches and oaks are sometimes crooked and multi-shoot. The oaks are overgrown with mosses and lichen. There are pines in some areas. It is partly a very steep western slope. The ground is rocky. At the northern edge of the forest lies a rocky ridge with potted fern vegetation . In lighter forest areas, the blueberry dominates the undergrowth. In the middle part of the forest there is a shallow, rocky-rubble steep slope area with light, stunted, unused sessile oak trees. Open debris with small rocks are embedded. Immediately below the Chapel of the Cross there is a larger, rocky, rocky slope area with sparse pioneer vegetation made up of types of grassland. At the southern edge of the forest is a small abandoned quarry with visible rock folds. The sparse vegetation is formed by types of grassland. The included section of the Osterntal is occupied by fat willows and a Christmas tree culture. The course of the stream is partially natural with a willow-alder-wooded border and accompanying tall herbaceous vegetation.

Protection purpose

The NSG is intended to protect the forest area and its species inventory. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
