The nature reserve Wissinghauser Heide with a size of 18.94  hectares is located in the nature park Sauerland-Rothaargebirge northwest of Wissinghausen in the urban area of Medebach . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2003 with the Medebach landscape plan. The NSG is part of the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht and is identical to the FFH area Wissinghauser Heide (DE 4717-307).

Area description

In the NSG there are heather , forest and a poor pasture. In the heather there are junipers and large stands of dwarf shrubs. It is allowed to pick blueberries and lingonberries from the dwarf shrubs for personal use in the months of July to October. Picking is only allowed by hand. Combs are expressly prohibited. The forest consists of multi-stemmed beeches . The multi-stemmed growth of the beeches comes from an earlier use of the coppice forest . There are also individual birch, pine and red spruce trees in the area. In the south-east there is a south-exposed, dry, and species-rich poor pasture. The majority of the NSG is grazed with Boer goats .

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”. The main reason for protection is the maintenance and restoration of the biotope types and the protection of flora and fauna in the area.

Protective measures

The Biological Station Hochsauerlandkreis carried out extensive protective measures in the area as part of a life project.
