Valentin Tschudi (born February 14, 1499 in Glarus ; † December 8, 1555 in Glarus) was a pupil of Huldrych Zwingli , Catholic priest, moderate reformer , one of the few representatives of the Via media of the Reformation , the first Evangelical Reformed pastor in Glarus and Glarus chronicler from 1521 to 1533.

Life

Tschudi was a son of the knight Marquard Tschudi and his wife Margaretha Zyli. He was a cousin of Aegidius Tschudi , Jost Tschudi and Ludwig the Younger. Tschudi was a favorite student of the still Catholic priest Huldrych Zwingli in Glarus, who had worked there from 1506 to 1518 and whose classes Tschudi had attended. With him he learned the ancient languages. Presumably on Zwingli's advice, he studied with Joachim Vadian in Vienna in 1512/1513 , in Pavia in 1513 , with the polymath Glarean in Basel in 1515 and in Paris from 1517 to 1521 .

In 1522 Tschudi became pastor in Glarus, a position he held until his death in 1555. For the first time, for the introduction of this, Zwingli was also present and had preached. Tschudi was thus the first Protestant pastor in Glarus. But he acted mediating and moderating, preached and exercised pastoral care for believers of both denominations and read Holy Mass to the Catholics until his marriage in 1530 and the suspension that followed . After that he was only active as an altar boy. He was a representative of the via media of the Reformation .

His chronicle of the years 1521 to 1533 was mainly kept in annual form, which identified him as an informed and competent observer. It is one of the most important sources on the history of the Reformation in the canton of Glarus.

In 1555, the highly respected pastor Tschudi died of the plague. His successor as pastor in Glarus was Fridolin Brunner , who was a reformer and pastor in various villages south of Glarus.
