Theodor von Liebenau

Theodor von Liebenau (born December 3, 1840 in Lucerne ; † November 16, 1914 there ) was a Swiss archivist and historian.

Life

He was a son of Hermann von Liebenau and Jakobea Pfyffer von Altishofen and the grandson of Joseph von Laßberg and Princess Elisabeth zu Fürstenberg .

From 1847 to 1852 he attended elementary school in Lucerne and then switched to high school and lyceum. From 1861 he studied in Innsbruck and Munich (1864/1865) Historical Sciences . In 1865 he began his professional career in the Fürstlich Fürstenberg Archive in Donaueschingen , but in autumn 1866 he came to the Lucerne State Archive . On July 1, 1867, he was promoted to sub- archivist there and on June 26, 1871, he was appointed state archivist . He was able to acquire the Gatterer apparatus for the State Archives .

Liebenau was a member of the History Research Society of Switzerland and was a member of its board from 1874 to 1898. He also participated in some cantonal history associations. He was also active in the Swiss Numismatic Society and the Heraldic Society "Adler". In 1877 he was made an honorary doctorate from the philosophy faculty and in 1906 an honorary citizen of Lucerne. Although Liebenau went blind in 1905, he remained the state archivist of Lucerne until his death.
