The Fürstlich Fürstenberg Archive is the private archive of the Princes of Fürstenberg and one of the largest aristocratic archives.

history

The archive building was built from 1756 to 1763 under the supervision of the Princely Building Director Franz Joseph Salzmann in Donaueschingen and includes the neighboring Princely Fürstenberg Court Library , the Princely Fürstenberg Brewery , Donaueschingen Castle , the Karlsbau, Villa Dolly, the Fürstenberg Chamber and the City Church St. Johann (Donaueschingen) to the residential area of the then village and today's city of Donaueschingen. It was unusual at the time to accommodate the archive in a separate building. Old documents from previous archives, which were often housed in buildings for other purposes, have now been transferred to Donaueschingen. Today it contains the documents and papers of all princely businesses as well as private papers and estates of princely family members. An archivist has been employed since 1723, when Prince Joseph Wilhelm Ernst zu Fürstenberg Donaueschingen became the residence of the principality. A well-known archivist, who only worked in Donaueschingen for about a year, was Theodor von Liebenau , a grandson of Elisabeth zu Fürstenberg . In addition, were Sigmund Riezler , Franz Ludwig Baumann and Georg Tumbült work here.

Today the volumes of the former Princely Court Library are also in the archive building.
