Franz Ludwig von Baumann

Franz Ludwig Baumann , from 1908 Knight von Baumann , (born June 8, 1846 in Leutkirch im Allgäu , † October 2, 1915 in Bad Adelholzen ) was a German historian , archivist and prominent member of the Kempten Heimatverein .

biography

Franz Ludwig Baumann, who grew up in Wangen as the offspring of an "old farmer family from the Allgäu" , studied history, legal history and theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich after attending the Kempten Humanistic High School . There he became a member of the Catholic student association Ottonia . From 1872 he worked as an archivist at the Princely Fürstenberg Archives in Donaueschingen , initially as chancellery and archive registrar at Sigmund Riezler's side , and from 1882 as director of the archive. During this time, he was in charge of the management of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings in Donaueschingen. After joining the Bavarian archives service in 1895, he was appointed director of the Reichsarchiv Munich in 1903 . Baumann had been an extraordinary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1895 and a full member since 1906. In 1908 he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown , with which the personal nobility (title Ritter von Baumann ) was connected. Since 1873 he was married to Silvanie, daughter of the sculptor Joseph Otto Entres , and thus brother-in-law of the parliamentarian Georg von Orterer .

In his publications, Franz Ludwig Baumann mainly dealt with the history of Swabia . With the hypotheses that he put forward in 1879 in a work on the Gugrafschaften in Swabia in Wirtemberg , he had a lasting impact on research on the early medieval constitutional history. His main work as an author, the three-volume history of the Allgäu , appeared from 1883. He also emerged as the editor and editor of collections of sources on the history of the country. The first of these publications dealt with the Peasants' War in Upper Swabia . In collaboration with Riezler, the Fürstenberg Document Book , which appeared in seven volumes from 1877 , was created, which contains all the documents relating to the history of the Fürstenberg family and its possessions in Swabia up to 1509 - partly as full text, partly as regest . This work is linked to the collection of sources covering the period up to 1617, which Baumann published together with Georg Tumbülle , his successor as archivist in Donaueschingen.

Works (selection)

Baumann's works are often considered obsolete in specialist circles. In particular, theses in his work History of the Allgäu are refuted.
