The Lucerne State Archives in Lucerne have the statutory task of permanently securing, opening up, conveying and evaluating valuable documents from the administration of the Swiss canton of Lucerne . The archive is administratively affiliated to the cantonal justice and security department.

history

The oldest documents go back to the 9th century, in copies around 1150. On June 26, 1871 Theodor von Liebenau became state archivist. He was able to acquire the Gatterer apparatus for the State Archives .

Stocks

The archive's holdings can be divided into four groups:

  • the administrative records of the city of Lucerne from the 13th to the 18th century,
  • the documents of the cantonal administration and courts since 1798 ,
  • the archives of the monasteries that were closed in the 19th century (this group focuses on the archives of the Cistercian monastery of St. Urban , the Franciscan monasteries of Lucerne and Werthenstein and the knight houses of Hitzkirch , Hohenrain and Reiden ), and
  • the archives of private persons and institutions such as associations, parties and industrial or commercial enterprises. The last group includes, in particular, the documents from Catholic associations that are active throughout Switzerland, such as Fastenopfer , Caritas Switzerland , the Swiss Catholic Women's Association or the federal management of Jungwacht Blauring .

The Lucerne State Archive is housed in a new archive building built in 1993 .
