Archive building

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An archive building has to meet special requirements due to the fundamental uniqueness of the documents stored in the archive . As in library construction , operational and conservation requirements must be harmonized in the spatial plan. An archive magazine in particular poses special building physics and safety challenges.

Architectural planning principles

Basic questions that must be clarified during planning:

  • Location in the area : geology, groundwater, surface waters
  • Space program : space requirement; Separation of the areas of storage, administration and public traffic; Traffic routes of employees and users as well as archival documents
  • Construction of the rooms : underground or above ground; (Window) openings, effects of light radiation; internal pipes and sewers; Walls, thermal and hygrometric quality; Materials as sources of possible pollutants
  • Indoor climate : climate values, possibility of natural ventilation, necessity of air conditioning, exchange / circulation; Air conditioning, "intelligent" ventilation, climate measurement
  • Light : natural and artificial light, light sources, effects on climatic conditions
  • Security : Risks in the storage rooms, in the building and in the vicinity, fire, water and intrusion alarms, evacuation options and emergency plan
  • Equipment of the rooms : material-specific properties of the documents and packaging materials, handling of special formats, requirements for shelves and furniture
