Jalalaqsi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jalalaqsi (also Jalalassi , Italian Gialalassi or Pietro Verri ) is a city in the Hiiraan region in Somalia with about 15,000 inhabitants. It lies on the Shabeelle River between Buulobarde and Jawhar and is the capital of the Jalalaqsi district.

After the Ogaden War in 1977/78, four camps for refugees from the Ogaden were set up near Jalalaqsi . With around 85,000 inhabitants, these became the third largest settlement in Somalia after the cities of Mogadishu and Hargeysa in the mid-1980s .

In 1990 rebels of the United Somali Congress attacked the military base in nearby Beledweyne in the beginning Somali civil war . The state army then retreated south through the Shabeelle Valley, killing and looting in Beledweyne, Buulobarde, Jalalaqsi and Jawhar. After these events, in which the bridge over the Shabeelle was destroyed, the place Jalalaqsi was temporarily deserted. Of the around 18,000 refugees at the time, around 10,000 had returned to Ethiopia or Mogadishu.

Before the civil war, Jalalaqsi had a primary and a secondary school. At the end of May 2007, the only hospital in Jalalaqsi District, which had been closed for a long time, was reopened.
