Beledweyne (also written Beled Weyne , Belet Weyne , Belet Uen or Belet Huen ) is a city in central Somalia with about 108,000 inhabitants and the capital of the Hiiraan region . The city is located in the Shabeelle valley , which divides it into an eastern and western part, near the border with Ethiopia .
The residents belong to various sub- clans of the Hawiye and the Makanne ethnic minority .
history
Because of its strategic location near the border, Beledweyne served in the 1970s as a starting point for actions by the Western Somali Liberation Front in the nearby Ethiopian Somali- inhabited Ogaden area , which some Somali would like to incorporate into a Greater Somalia .
After the Ogaden War , many refugees poured into Somalia via Beledweyne. The majority of these belonged to the Ogadeni- Darod clan, which dominates the Ogaden , and conflicts arose with the local Hawiye. Some Ogaden refugees still live in Beledweyne to this day (2008).
In the Somali civil war that began in 1991, subclans of the Hawiye fought for control of the city.
In 1993/94, the German Somalia Support Association was stationed in the area around Beledweyne as part of the UNOSOM II mission .
As of mid-2006, Beledweyne was under the control of the Union of Islamic Courts , which wanted to take control of Ogaden from here. After Ethiopia declared war on the Union, Beledweyne was bombed by the Ethiopian air force at the end of December 2006, Ethiopian ground forces penetrated via Beledweyne into Somalia and displaced the Union. Yusuf Dabageed was appointed administrator of the Somali interim government for the Hiiraan region.
In 2008 Beledweyne was temporarily the place with the largest Ethiopian military presence in Somalia after Mogadishu and Baidoa .
As opponents of Ethiopia and the interim government in the area advanced more and more, administrator Dabageed left the city in April 2008. The transitional government then appointed a new regional administration. Fighting between Ethiopians and opponents of the government broke out in July 2008 and many residents fled the city. The situation worsened particularly for internally displaced persons who fled to Beledweyne and have now been displaced again.
At the end of July 2009, the transitional government recaptured all of Beledweyne from the Islamist al-Shabaab .
