Hussein Mohammed Farah (born August 16, 1962 in Beledweyne , Somalia ), also known as Hussein Aidid or Aidid junior , is a warlord in the Somali civil war , son and successor of Mohammed Farah Aidid .

Life

At the age of 14, Hussein Mohammed Farah Aidid went to the United States. He attended a high school in Covina , California , from which he graduated in 1981. In April 1987 he joined the United States Marine Corps . For this he worked as a translator during Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, as he was the only "Marine" to speak Somali . He was later granted US citizenship and stayed in the US until he was 30.

After his father's death on 2 August 1996 Hussein was from the clan of Habre Gedir- Hawiye appointed as his successor. His appointment as clan leader was seen as an opportunity to improve the relationship between Somalia and the West. He also took over the leadership of the Somali National Alliance SNA, which Mohammed Farah Aidid had concluded against UNOSOM and UNITAF .

He, too, proclaimed himself “President” of Somalia, but was forced into exile in Ethiopia in 1999. In 1998 he signed a peace agreement with Ali Mahdi Mohammed , against which his father and later he had fought violently.

The internationally recognized transitional federal government formed in 2000 initially rejected Hussein. He accused her of unproven contacts with al-Qaeda and in 2001 joined the Council for Reconciliation and Reconstruction in Somalia, the SRRC, which turned against the transitional government. In the same year he also pointed out to the USA that the money transfer company al-Barakat had allegedly made payments for terrorists.

In July 2003 the transitional government and the SRRC came to an agreement, for which the latter received a number of seats in the transitional parliament. On October 25, 2005, Hussein released approximately 3,000 anti-personnel mines to the Geneva Call organization ; he and other warring parties had agreed to stop using these weapons. Since 2005 he has been Deputy Prime Minister of the transitional government. He was also Minister of the Interior until February 7, 2007, after which he became Minister of Public Works and Housing instead.

Despite joining the interim government, tensions persisted between Hussein Mohammed Farah and other members of the interim government, particularly over the presence of Ethiopian troops to protect the interim government. After heavy fighting in Mogadishu between Ethiopians and Somali rebels, in which up to 1,000 people were killed, he accused Ethiopia of “genocide” against the Somali population. In May 2007, Hussein Mohammed Farah was dismissed by Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Ghedi because he was inactive in his office. He moved to Eritrea and is now active in the Alliance for the Liberation of Somalia .
