The Somali National Alliance (Somali National Alliance; abbreviated SNA ) was an alliance of warring parties in the Somali civil war , which was formed in July 1992 under the leadership of Mohammed Farah Aidid . It consisted of the Aidid-led part of the United Somali Congress , the Somali Patriotic Movement under Siad Hersi , Osman Ali Ato and other parties fighting in southern Somalia . The SNA opposed the foreign humanitarian intervention UNOSOM / UNITAF and became the bulwark of armed resistance against UNOSOM II . About 2,000–4,000 SNA fighters were involved in the Battle of Mogadishu .

After Mohammed Farah Aidid's death in 1996, his son Hussein Mohammed Farah became the leader of the SNA. The SNA formed the core of the Council for Reconciliation and Reconstruction in Somalia, SRRC, founded in 2001 .
