Life

Rolf Müller, his real name, was born in Essen-Katernberg . As a schoolboy he was enthusiastic about the current rock 'n' roll hits that he secretly heard on his parents' radio. From the end of the 1950s he appeared under the name Charly from Essen with his guitar and various accompanying bands in ballrooms and dance clubs in the Ruhr area . Although the singer was not yet of legal age, he won several singing competitions. The well-known for his talent shows emcee Udo Werner gave the young artists 1961 test shots with the renowned record producer Heinz Gietz in Cologne .

In 1962 Gietz, who gave the singer the stage name Benny Quick , produced his debut single Motorbiene , which was released in November 1962 on the Columbia label of Electrola . The piece developed into a hymn for the hooligans , only an average rank 27 in the German music charts . Heinz Hellmer wrote the German text , garnished with motorcycle noises. The original English version of Motorcycle by Tico & The Triumphs ( Paul Simon ) made it to 99th place on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA for just one week . Benny Quicks Motorbiene is still one of the best and most famous doo-wop titles in the German language and one of the evergreens of German hits .

With the following single Hello Josephine (original by Fats Domino ) Benny Quick was able to land a modest respectable success, but in the hit parades the performer proved to be a one-hit wonder . In addition, the singer was increasingly dissatisfied with his record company, for which he also had to sing hits and undemanding fashion dance and twist numbers. Quick could not repeat the success of the debut with other German cover versions of American pop titles. Quicks Columbia recordings included California Sun ( The Rivieras ), Pretty Woman ( Roy Orbison ), Auch ohne Ring (This Diamond Ring) ( Gary Lewis & the Playboys ) and the pieces sung with Petra Prinz Bleib bei mir, Babe ( I Got You Babe) and We're Going Our Way Alone (But You're Mine) ( Sonny and Cher ). We go our own way is considered to be one of the first German protest songs .

After the departure of band leader Didi Zill , Benny Quick took over the musicians of the beat group Didi & His ABC-Boys in 1965 , which became his permanent backing band under the name The Shandios . In the same year Quick recorded the live recorded music album Twens Top for Columbia with the band, which included Friedl Kuhnke and Henk van der Horst . It contained German and English language cover versions of current hits by The Animals ( The House of the Rising Sun ), The Beatles , Elvis Presley , Cliff Richard and The Shadows .

After the record deal with Columbia ended, Quick was especially successful live with his band. They often appeared in the Tante Olga bar in Duisburg and a few times in the Hamburg Star Club . Quick has been working as a DJ in Frankfurt am Main and the surrounding area since the 1970s . From around 1970 to mid-1974 he worked on weekends in Petterweil in the north of Frankfurt in the disco "Contra" as a resident DJ. In the mid-1970s, he was standing behind the mixer in the opposite discotheque in Alt-Sachsenhausen. Around 1977 the Nobel discotheque Sounds opened in Frankfurt's Kaiserstraße , where Quick was the first DJ.

As part of the rock 'n' roll revival in 1979, Benny Quick's Columbia tracks were re-released on an LP . In particular, the hit Motorbiene has since repeatedly constituent of Oldie - samplers . Also, Quick reappeared on various television shows with the title in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1990 the play Motorbiene , which has since become a classic, found its way into the soundtrack of the successful film Werner - Beinhart! Use. In 1991 Benny Quick's complete Columbia recordings were released on CD .

A few hours before his planned wedding to his long-time girlfriend Susanne, Benny Quick committed suicide on December 22, 1999. His partner found him hanged after returning from visiting the hairdresser. Benny Quick was buried on December 30, 1999 in the Westhausen cemetery in Frankfurt am Main.
