The Rivieras were an American surf rock band, best known in the 1960s for their California Sun title .

history

The band was founded in the early 1960s in South Bend (Indiana) , USA and initially appeared under the name The Playmates . In early 1964 she published the song California Sun under the name The Rivieras , which Henry Glover and Morris Levy had originally written in 1961 for a singer named Joe Jones. The single reached number 5 on the US charts and is considered the last major US hit before the British Invasion took over the US charts. In Germany the song reached number 15 in the singles charts. After the band's hit, the singer left the Rivieras, and the previous manager Bill Dobslaw took over the vocal part. Several minor successes followed before the band split in 1966.

Other covers of California Sun appeared in 1966 by Hal Blaine , 1967 by Tommy James & the Shondells and 1968 by Ola & the Janglers . German-language versions were published in 1964 by Benny Quick and in 1971 under the title California Nacht by Mary Roos . Another version of the hit single California Sun appeared in 1977 on the B-side of one of the first singles of the US punk band Ramones and on their 1977 album Leave Home . The rock band The Dictators also released the song on their 1975 debut album The Dictators Go Girl Crazy! . In 1987 the Rivieras version was used for the soundtrack to the film Good Morning, Vietnam .
