Curtis James Martin Junior (born May 1, 1973 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American football player in the running back position . He played for the New England Patriots and the New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL) from 1995 to 2006 , during which time he achieved 14,101 yards, the fourth-highest gain in space in the history of the NFL. Martin has been a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame since 2012 .

Professional time

Martin played college football at the University of Pittsburgh and was selected by the New England Patriots in the 1995 third round of the NFL Draft . Under his then head coach Bill Parcells , he was voted NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in his first year as a professional . After three years with the Patriots, where he twice in the Pro Bowl has been selected and the Super Bowl XXXI attended, joined Martin in 1998 for 36 million US dollars to the New York Jets . Here he was able to run over 1000 yards of space gain in seven consecutive seasons and was elected three more times in the Pro Bowl. In 2004, at the age of 31, he led the league in the "Run Yards" category, making him the oldest player to do so. He ended his career in 2006 after a knee injury.

In twelve seasons he was elected to the Pro Bowl five times. Besides Barry Sanders , he is only the second player to have gained over 1,000 yards of space in the first ten seasons of his career. Only Emmitt Smith , Walter Payton and Barry Sanders gained more than Martin's 14,101 yards of space in their careers.

The New York Jets honor Curtis Martin on the Ring of Honor . On September 6, 2012 it was announced that his jersey number 28 will no longer be awarded.

Private life

Martin has a daughter with his wife Carolina. In his acceptance speech for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame , he revealed his unhappy childhood, which was marked by poverty and domestic violence of his drug addict father Curtis Sr. against his mother Rochella. When Curtis Junior was nine, his grandmother was stabbed to death, and when he was 15, a burglar tried to shoot him, but even though he pulled the trigger six times, no shot went off. For a long time, Martin viewed football as more of an escape, it was only in the NFL that he recognized his true talent. Martin, who is closely connected to his mother, financed his father's rehab and ensured the reconciliation of the family. He is heavily involved in charitable foundations and mentions the biblical figure Job as his inspiration .
