The Turicum AG was a Swiss manufacturer of automobiles .

history

The company was founded in 1904 by watchmaker Martin Fischer and his partner Paul Vorbrodt. It was initially produced in Zurich and from 1907 as the Turicum AG automobile factory ( Turicum : Roman name for Zurich) in Uster . Martin Fischer left the company in 1908 to manufacture Fischer automobiles under his name .

In 1913 the company had around 140 employees. The vehicles were exported worldwide, there were even license productions in France and Bohemia. Reliability and other races brought numerous successes. However, after around 1000 vehicles had been built, production had to be stopped in 1914.

vehicles

In 1904 a foot-operated prototype of a single-seater was created, which was equipped with a single-cylinder motorcycle engine and single- speed gearbox. In 1905 several second generation prototypes with friction gear followed. A friction wheel covered with leather took the power from a cast iron flywheel at right angles. The ratio and driving speed can be varied in seven steps. From 1907 to 1908 the Turicum series A received air-cooled single-cylinder engines with 785 cm³ displacement (7 HP (5.1 kW) output) or 970 cm³ displacement.

As early as 1907 there were water-cooled four- cylinder and 1909 two-cylinder engines . The four-cylinder models (type series B and D) had 1944 cm³ displacement and 16 HP (12 kW), the two-cylinder model (type series C) 972 cm³ with 8 HP (6 kW) power. Until the end of 1911, they were all equipped with a friction wheel and then (only four-cylinder) optionally also with a gear drive and were offered in numerous different bodies or as a chassis.

Type series A (single cylinder) were produced in 1907 and 1908, type series C (two-cylinder) only in 1909 and type series B and D (four-cylinder) from 1907 to 1908 (B) and 1909 to 1912 (D).

Two vehicles of this brand can be viewed in the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne , and two more in the Musée de l'automobile de la Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny . The oldest known Turicum from August 1907 with an oak chassis and clock steel round suspension can be seen in the Bäretswil vehicle museum owned by the Junod family. In total, around a dozen turicums are still known around the world.
