Origin of the foundation

View of the classic car exhibition

Léonard Gianadda, engineer, journalist, artist and internationally honored patron of the arts, found the remains of a Roman temple in 1976 on a site on which he was supposed to build a house . Since his younger brother Pierre had died in a plane crash when he was only 25, Léonard set up a cultural foundation and named it Pierre Gianadda in memory of his brother .

Léonard Gianadda acquired the site and had a concrete building built according to his own design in a modern architecture exactly above the excavation site of the temple remains.

Complete information on the foundation

The foundation has an annual budget of around 8 million Swiss francs, in which the municipality of Martigny contributes more than 545,000 SFr. Around 60 employees are employed. Since the museums opened, more than 6.7 million visitors from all over the world have been received (as of 2006). The main sponsors are the municipality of Martigny, the canton of Valais , Credit Suisse , UBS and Loterie Romand . The foundation's partners include the Barry Foundation, the St. Bernhard Tunnel, RailAway and the Palais Lumière in Evian.

The different areas of the foundation

main building

Example from the path of fame

The large new building serves as an entrance building and exhibition hall. It houses three permanent exhibitions: the Gallo-Roman Museum on the early history of the place, the ten most beautiful paintings from the collection of Evelyn and Louis Franck and a small vintage car collection of 50 cars from the years 1897 to 1939, including rare exhibits from Swiss automobile manufacturers .

The large central room of the main building is used for art exhibitions, which change several times each year, primarily for private collections and rare exhibits, and for concerts.

On the sidewalk in front of the main building, a path of fame was laid out, on the slabs of which hand, footprints or signatures of famous guests are immortalized.

The major temporary expositions began in 1980.

Sculpture park

Exhibits in the sculpture park

The extensive park adjacent to the entrance building shows an extensive collection of sculptures by the following renowned artists of the 20th century:

Park villa

Model from the da Vinci exhibition

In the middle of the park is the old arsenal building of the Fondation, in which the administration is housed and a permanent exhibition of drawings and models on the subject of Leonardo da Vinci - inventor is shown.

A bistro in an extension to the park villa offers visitors a little refreshment.

Restoration workshop

The Fondation restores works of art of various kinds with its own specialists, also for other museums and institutions.
