The Loterie Romande is a Swiss lottery with lottery monopoly for French-speaking Switzerland .

history

Loterie Romande was founded in 1937 by the cantons of Vaud , Friborg , Valais , Neuchâtel and Geneva . The purpose was to distribute the profits made to the cities so that social needs and well-being could be secured. In the same year, the Intercantonal State Lottery (ILL) was founded in Ticino and German-speaking Switzerland . The canton of Jura joined Loterie Romande when it was founded in 1979.

Until 1984 the Loterie Romande organized lottery events with balls numbered from 1 to 9. These took place once or twice a month and were located in a town in western Switzerland.

In 1978 the lottery launched the first scratch card in Europe, which was immediately very popular.

In 1987 "Tribolo" was launched, which is still sold today due to its great popularity. So far, over 430 subjects have been issued, always on a current topic. In the same year, the offer was greatly expanded.

Since 1999, electronic games have also increasingly been offered. With the help of touchscreens , card games can also be played without paper.

Since October 8, 2004, the company has also been connected to the “ Euro Millions ” game . Today it also offers around 15 instant win tickets, three online games, a horse bet , electronic games, Swiss Lotto and various sports bets .

The lottery is one of the most competitive in Europe and has spent around two billion Swiss francs on charitable causes since 1998 .

Distribution of profits

In 2008, the lottery had gross gaming revenue of CHF 366 million and a profit of CHF 185 million. This was then distributed to eight different public areas. More than a third went to culture and around an eighth each to youth and education, as well as health and disability.
