Edward Earl "Ed" Reed Jr. (* 11. September 1978 in St. Rose , Louisiana ) is a football coach and former US American football poker players on the position of the Free safeties . He played most of his career for the Baltimore Ravens , with whom he won Super Bowl XLVII , and was elected to the Pro Bowl nine times .
Career
Reed played college football for the University of Miami . Together with future NFL players such as Andre Johnson , Jeremy Shockey and Bryant McKinnie , he was part of the team that won the unbeaten NCAA championship in 2001. In 2002 he was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the NFL Draft . In the team around linebacker Ray Lewis , Reed established himself as a valuable reinforcement, who was elected to the Pro Bowl in his second professional year . In the 2004 season he was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year after a good season (64 solo tackles, nine interceptions , 358 yards of space gained through interceptions and three touchdowns ) .
At the Baltimore Ravens under Head Coach Brian Billick , which at that time had a dominant defense but never very good quarterbacks (neither Kyle Boller nor Steve McNair could convince permanently), Reed only reached the play-offs twice until 2007 . Both times they were eliminated in the first game. Since the new starting quarterback Joe Flacco was drafted in 2008 , Reed and the Ravens made it into the play-offs for five years in a row (2008-2012). In his first Super Bowl on February 3, 2013 in New Orleans against the San Francisco 49ers , the Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl XLVII of the 2012 season with 34:31. Before that, the Ravens could only win the Super Bowl once ( Super Bowl XXXV on January 28, 2001 in Tampa , Florida , 34: 7 win over the New York Giants ).
In March 2013, Reed joined the Houston Texans . He was released by the Texans in November 2013 and signed a contract with the New York Jets shortly afterwards .
Reed holds the NFL record for longest interception return (November 23, 2008) at 107 yards and the record for most interception return yards in a season (2004) at 358 yards.
With the exception of his 2002 rookie season and 2005 season, Reed was elected to the Pro Bowl every year .
On May 7, 2015, he announced the end of his career after signing a one-day contract with the Baltimore Ravens.
On January 13, 2016, the Buffalo Bills signed him as an assistant coach for the defensive backs .
Private
Reed supports disadvantaged children in his "Ed Reed Foundation".
Reed's brother Brian drowned on January 7, 2011 while fleeing the Mississippi police force . He had jumped into the river to avoid arrest; He is said to have previously stolen a car and used this vehicle to push another road user off the street. His body was recovered in late January.
