Domestic violence video scandal

On September 8, 2014, a video from a surveillance camera of an elevator at the Revel Hotel in Atlantic City surfaced on the Internet , showing Rice knocking his then fiancée Janay Palmer unconscious with a targeted slap in the face and then out of the elevator dragged.

The incident occurred back in March 2014. At that time, Palmer, who was married to Rice when the video was circulating in September 2014, did not testify in court and the charges against Rice were dropped. The NFL commissioner Roger Goodell imposed a two-game ban on Rice in this regard in July 2014. After the video was released in September, the general pressure on the NFL and Baltimore Ravens from media and international voices just before the 2014 season was so great that Rice was eventually sacked from the Ravens and banned from the NFL indefinitely. The Ravens even offered their fans the opportunity to exchange purchased Ray Rice jerseys for another player jersey free of charge.

Rice tried to re-establish himself in the NFL after the scandal and to find a new employer. He was even willing to forego his salary and donate it to campaigns against domestic violence so as not to leave the sports world in a scandal and, as he himself says, "save face in front of his children". At the same time, however, he saw that his NFL career was in all likelihood over for good.
