Coaching career

Assistant coach

John Harbaugh became an assistant coach at his college after graduation . He was responsible for training the defensive backs at the RedHawks. From 1984 he coached the running backs at Western Michigan University for three years before moving to the University of Pittsburgh in 1987 , where he was in charge of the tight ends . In 1988 he coached the special teams at Morehead State University . As special teams coordinator, he was in charge of the University of Cincinnati from 1989 to 1996 and that of Indiana University in 1997 .

Harbaugh moved in 1998 in this role to the professional area of the Philadelphia Eagles , supervised by Ray Rhodes . The following year Andy Reid took over the position of head coach for the Philadelphia team . They managed to form a top team from the Eagles. From 2001 onwards, Harbaugh and the Eagles failed three times in the NFC Championship Game : in 2001 at 24:29 at the St. Louis Rams supervised by Dick Vermeil , in 2002 at 10:27 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coached by Jon Gruden and in the year 2003 3:14 to the Carolina Panthers under their coach John Fox .

In 2004 Harbaugh was able to win the NFC title with the Philadelphia Eagles. In the NFC Championship Game, the Atlanta Falcons were beaten by 27:10. The subsequent Super Bowl XXXIX was lost to the New England Patriots at 21:24 .

Trainer

In 2008 Harbaugh moved to the Baltimore Ravens as Head Coach , where he succeeded Brian Billick . Harbaugh managed to establish the team around rookie quarterback Joe Flacco , linebacker Ray Lewis and tight end Todd Heap as the top team in the American Football Conference (AFC). In his first year in office he failed with the team from Maryland in the AFC Championship Game with 23:14 at the Pittsburgh Steelers supervised by Mike Tomlin . In the two following years, the team from Baltimore moved into the play-offs , but failed in each division play-off game. In 2011, John Harbaugh extended his contract with the Ravens for three years. That year he lost his second AFC Championship game as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. After twelve wins from 16 games during the regular season , the Ravens could not prevail against the New England Patriots, trained by Bill Belichick , and lost just under 23:20.

On February 3, 2013, he won Super Bowl XLVII with the Ravens 34:31 against the San Francisco 49ers . The 49ers were coached by his brother Jim Harbaugh . In the five years after the Super Bowl victory, however, the Ravens could not repeat this success, they even moved into the playoffs only once. The upheaval then followed in the 2018 season : Rookie Lamar Jackson started instead of long-time quarterback Jos Flacco . He led the Ravens back to the playoffs. Also in the 2019 season , the Ravens were able to win the AFC North and even led the entire AFC after the regular season, but failed because of the Tennessee Titans in the Divisional Round. Harbaugh was named AP NFL Coach of the Year that year.
