Jew pond (Hanover)
The Jewish pond in front of Hanover was originally an old kolk der Leine . The pond , which was later filled in, was located under the (today's) Neustädter Marktplatz between the Neustädter Church and Calenberger Strasse in the Calenberger Neustadt district .
history
The Judenteich as part of the oxbow lake of the Leine originally belonged to the defenses of Lauenrode Castle , which was destroyed in 1371 by the citizens of Hanover. The popular name "Judenteich" was probably not created until the beginning of the 17th century and "probably" referred to the Jewish apartments on the Lauenroder Burgberg and their synagogue there .
After Duke Georg von Calenberg had designated the city of Hanover as his residence in 1636 in the middle of the Thirty Years War , the Calenberger Neustadt , which was in front of the city of Hanover and which was then included in the city fortifications , developed into the location of the authorities of the sovereign, his servants and soldiers. Initially, Vogt Friedrich Molinus, appointed by the Duke, was responsible for the expansion of the Calenberger Neustadt . Under his administration, the Jewish pond was first converted into a carp pond “ for the sake of the court in 1642” , in spite of protests from the citizens of Hanover, then filled in in 1661 in order to set up the Neustädter Fleischschren here first. From 1666 to 1670, the former Jewish pond was partially built over with the Neustädter Church, while the meat scraper was then relocated to the Leine in Neue Straße .
Well construction
Over the centuries, new fountains were built over the filled-in Jewish pond:
- 1670s to 1802: the Parnassus fountain ;
- 1829 to 1914: the castle fountain ;
- from 1916: the Duve fountain ;
- and finally the current table fountain by Max Sauk , set up in 1973/74
