The Duve fountain , also known as the Sämann fountain, is a fountain in the Hanover district of Calenberger Neustadt , which is named after the entrepreneur Johann Duve (1611–1679). The fountain is on the median of the Leibnitz bank . It was created in 1916 by the sculptor Georg Herting .

Construction and dismantling

For the 300th birthday of the entrepreneur and benefactor Johann Duve (1611–1679) at the beginning of the 20th century, the citizens of Hanover donated a memorial in the form of a fountain. In January 1903, a committee for the Duve memorial publicly called for donations for the first time . In addition to many citizens, the city also contributed larger amounts to the collection. The committee has also held various Duve festivals since 1906. From the 26 entries in a competition for the memorial, Georg Herting finally emerged as the winner with his design “And he went out to sow”.

The sower on the well is not an image of Duve. There is, however, a picture of Duve on the stone shaft of the well. The fountain figure symbolizes the beneficial activity of the honored person who sows grain (for the citizens) in order to harvest fruits. In modern history, however, Johann Duve is seen less unselfishly than an entrepreneur who is concerned about his own benefit.

It was not until 1913, a decade after the first appeal for donations, that the foundation stone for the fountain on Neustädter Markt could be laid. The fountain was supposed to be unveiled in 1914, but the First World War broke out during technical delays . After all, the Duve fountain could only be inaugurated with a modest ceremony in August 1916.

Before the installation, there were discussions about the installation site on the market square of the Neustadt, where some structural changes had to be made. A drinking stall operator felt impaired, an advertising column was covered and an iron horse drinker was obstructed. In addition, another fountain located on the square had to be moved first, today's castle fountain .

During the Second World War , the sower figure was brought to Hamburg to be melted down as part of the material collections , but it “survived” there.

reconstruction

After the air raids on Hanover and the new construction of the Leibnizufer street , the sower was brought back from Hamburg together with three putti originally attached to the fountain . But the putti no longer corresponded to the taste of the time and were no longer attached. The shaft of the well and the original water bowl have also been changed. The shaft circumference of the well was reduced and Kurt Lehmann flattened the bowl. Since then, the water has not flowed from openings in the bowl in four by twelve small jets as before; a veil of water overflowing the edge of the bowl was found to be more appropriate. On April 30, 1953, the fountain was put into operation at today's location. The fountain figure “Sower” looks in the direction of the original fountain location on Neustädter Markt .
