Richard Albert Vermeil (* the 30th October 1936 in Calistoga , California ) is a former American American football trainer. He coached the Los Angeles Rams , Philadelphia Eagles , St. Louis Rams, and Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL) .

Player career

Dick Vermeil studied at San José State University and played there in 1956 and 1957 as quarterback football for the San Jose State Spartans . In 1958, Vermeil received a bachelor's degree in physical education. A year later the master's degree followed. Dick Vermeil never played football as a professional.

Coaching career

College coach

By 1964, Dick Vermeil coached various high school football teams as well as junior college teams. In 1965 he became an assistant coach at Stanford University . He held this position for four years. After a stint at the Los Angeles Rams in 1969, he returned to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as an assistant coach in college sports in 1970 .

Los Angeles Rams

Dick Vermeil took over the supervision of the Rams' special teams under Head Coach George Allen in 1969 . After his return to the Rams, he looked after the quarterbacks of the team for three years. In 1973 the Rams won twelve of 14 games with quarterback John Hadl , but had to admit defeat to the Dallas Cowboys 27:16 in the play-offs . After that game year, Vermeil left the Los Angeles team and returned to UCLA.

University of California, Los Angeles

Vermeil coached the UCLA football team in 1974 and 1975. In 1975 he won the championship in the Pacific-12 Conference with the UCLA Bruins . In the Rose Bowl , his team was able to defeat the Ohio State University team with 23:10. Twelve Vermeil players, who were in his 1975 squad, were drafted by a team of the NFL after completing their studies . The performance of his team had also made him interesting as a coach for the NFL.

Philadelphia Eagles

In 1976, Dick Vemeil replaced Mike McCormack as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles had speculated on the signing of young players and had slipped down the table of the NFL. Vermeil managed to form a top team from the Eagles.

Ron Jaworski

The aging quarterback of the team Roman Gabriel was replaced by Ron Jaworski and found in the offense of the team from Pennsylvania with wide receiver Harold Carmichael a top player for his passes. In 1978 Vermeil was able to lead his team into the play-offs for the first time, but where they failed prematurely with 14:13 at the Atlanta Falcons . In the following game year the Eagles managed to bind Sid Gillman to the team by contract. Gillman was a legendary coach and had introduced numerous innovations to the sport of football. He was entrusted by Vermeil to look after the quarterbacks. In the 1979 season, Vermeil's team won eleven of 16 games in the regular season . However, the team could not prevail in the NFC Divisional Play-Off game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and lost 24:17. In 1980, the collaboration between Vermeil and Gillman should bring the greatest success. Ron Jaworski played an outstanding season and was called to the Pro Bowl after the game round . The twelve victories of the Philadelphia team were offset by two defeats this year. This time the Eagles qualified for the NFC Championship Game , where they met the Dallas Cowboys . With a 20: 7 win over the Tom Landry supervised Cowboys, the Eagles won the NFC Championship and qualified for the Super Bowl . Opponents in Super Bowl XV were the Oakland Raiders trained by Tom Flores , who got the upper hand at 27:10. Dick Vermeil fell ill with burnout syndrome in 1982 and resigned from his coaching position. For the next 15 years he worked as a sports presenter, only in 1997 he returned to the NFL as a coach.

St. Louis Rams

Prior to the 1997 season, Dick Vermeil signed a contract with the St. Louis Rams. The team from St. Louis was not a top team before the commitment of Vermeil and found themselves regularly on one of the lower places in the table after the end of the season. This should not change in the next two years either. In 1998 the Rams were able to sign quarterback Kurt Warner . Warner had not been included in the NFL Draft and did not get beyond the role of reserve player in his freshman year in Missouri . However, he had already proven in the NFL Europe with the Amsterdam Admirals in the spring of that year that he can lead a team. The following season he was able to secure the position of starting quarterback and was elected to the Pro Bowl after this game round. In the same year, the Rams managed a spectacular new signing with Marshall Faulk, who later became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame . Vermeil also managed to shape other young players such as Torry Holt , Tom Nütten and Isaac Bruce into top players. The Rams have 13 wins from 16 games this year. After they had defeated the Buccaneers 11: 6 in the NFC final, they also won Super Bowl XXXIV 23:16 against the Tennessee Titans , supervised by Jeff Fisher . After the win, Vermeil temporarily withdrew from football.

Kansas City Chiefs

From 2001, Richard Vermeil coached the Kansas City Chiefs. As with the Eagles and the Rams, this team had been successful a few years ago. Vermeil needed a year to lead the team around the top tight end Tony Gonzalez to a balanced annual balance and another year to reach the play-offs with the team. In 2003 he won 13 of 16 games with his team from Kansas City , but lost the AFC Divisional Play-Off game to the Indianapolis Colts with 38:31. After a weaker game year in 2004, the Chiefs won ten of 16 games in 2005, which was not enough to move into the play-offs. Vermeil ended his coaching career after this season.

Outside the arena

Dick Vermeil is married with three children. He now lives alternately in Kansas City and on a ranch in Chester County near Philadelphia. He also runs a winery in his hometown. In 2006 the Hollywood film Invincible - The Dream of a Lifetime was made . In the film, Vermeil is played by Greg Kinnear . The film deals with Vermeil's time with the Eagles and the signing of Vince Papale (played by Mark Wahlberg ).

Honors

Richard Vermeil has been named NFL Coach of the Year four times and is a member of the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame , California Sports Hall of Fame, Chester County Sports Hall of Fame, National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, and the Eagles Hall of Fame . In 2006 he received the Walter Camp Distinguished American Award . The Rams honor him in the Edward Jones Dome on the St. Louis Football Ring Of Fame .
