The city of Calistoga was founded in 1859 by Samuel Brannan and is located at the northern end of the Napa Valley, about 120 km away from San Francisco , between extensive fields of grapevines.
One of the sights is the " Old Faithful " geyser , which emits a fountain up to 20 m high at regular intervals .
Calistoga is ideal for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and canoeing. However, it is very hot in the summer months. Brannan founded the city to bring tourists to the medicinal springs he discovered and acquired here. He even built a railroad for it. However, the project failed due to too few visitors.
The city has two museums:
- Redwoods Museum: Relics from the early days of the city
- Sharpsteen Museum : dioramas and artifacts from Indians
Daughters and sons of the city
- Dick Vermeil (born 1936), American football coach
