Introduction of a back numbering scheme
Because football was sometimes difficult to follow on black and white television and to aid referees , the NFL introduced a set standard for jersey numbers. So got the numbers
- 1–19 only quarterbacks, kickers and punters.
- 20–49 only running backs and defensive backs.
- 50–59 only centers and linebackers.
- 60–79 only defensive and offensive linemen (guards, tackles).
- 80–89 only wide receivers and tight ends.
The numbers 0, 00 and 90 to 99 could not be used anymore from this point in time, the numbers of players who already played in the NFL, grandfathering enjoyed. In later years, however, the numbers 90–99 were allowed again.
TV Blackout Rules
Up to and including the 1972 season , no NFL games (including the championship and superbowl games) were shown in the hometown of the team on television ( blacked-out ). It was not until this season that the NFL changed u. a. at the urging of the US Congress, their strategy and passed a rule whereby any game that is sold out 72 hours before the kickoff can be shown on local television.
