The Metropolitan Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in Bloomington , Minnesota . The stadium was built in 1955 and served the various sports teams in Minneapolis until 1985. On January 28, 1985, the demolition in favor of the new Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome followed . The Mall of America has been on the site since 1992 .
history
The stadium opened in 1956 and initially served as the new home ground for the Minneapolis Millers baseball team . At that time it still held 18,000 spectators, but a short time later it was expanded to 22,000. In 1961, the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings moved into the stadium after the Millers broke up. Together, the capacity was increased to around 30,000 spaces.
The stadium was continuously enlarged and increased to its eventual capacity. In between, the Minnesota Kicks moved into the Metropolitan for five years. In 1985, after both teams had moved to the Minneapolis-built Metrodome four years earlier , it was demolished. The Mall of America was built on the area of the stadium . A commemorative plaque still refers to the stadium at that time.
