The University of Tampa (UT) is an American private university in Tampa , Florida . In autumn 2018, 9,600 students were enrolled there.

Historical

The educational institution was founded in 1931 by Frederic Spaulding as Tampa Junior College. It was in 1933 to the university and moved this year into the of the railroad magnate Henry B. Plant founded and due to the Great Depression closed Tampa Bay Hotel, now a Grade I listed Moorish-style building. In 1941, a 99-year lease with an annual lease payment of $ 1 was signed with the City of Tampa as the landlord. The university experienced a period of financial difficulties during the 1990s, but it was overcome by a large fundraising campaign and not least thanks to the patronage of the family of John H. Sykes, the founder of Sykes Enterprises . The main building of the university now houses a museum dedicated to Henry Bradley Plant.
