The 1953 NFL season was the 34th season of the National Football League . The Detroit Lions emerged as the winners of this season .

Changes

For the 1953 season, the returned Dallas Texans franchise was sold by the NFL to a group from Baltimore, which then formed the Baltimore Colts . The founder of the Cleveland Browns , Mickey McBride, sold the team to a group of investors around Dave R. Jones before the start of the season . The American and National Conference were renamed Eastern and Western Conference.

The 1953 NFL Championship Game took place on December 27, 1953 at Briggs Stadium in Detroit , Michigan . The winners of the Eastern and Western divisions competed against each other.

Records

  • Bert Rechichar hit a field goal from 56 yards for the Baltimore Colts on September 27, 1953 . He exceeded the previous record of 1934 with two yards. The record wasn't broken until 1970 by Tom Dempsey (63 yards).
  • Willie Thrower played as the first black quarterback in the NFL on October 18, 1953. The Chicago Bears player completed three of eight passes for 27 yards and one interception in the game against the San Francisco 49ers . It was his only game in the NFL.
