The Dallas Texans were an American football team from the US National Football League (NFL) from Dallas , which was only active in the 1952 season . With just one win from twelve games, they are among the worst teams in NFL history.

history

In 1944 the Boston Yanks were founded. After struggling financially, the franchise was sold to New York in 1949, where they competed as the New York Bulldogs and shortly thereafter as the New York Yanks. After the 1951 season , these also stopped playing. The franchise was sold to a group of Dallas investors for $ 300,000, who then formed the Texans.

The team's first head coach was Jim Phelan . However, the Texans struggled to generate viewers. Their first home game at the Cotton Bowl , a 6:24 loss to the New York Giants , only attracted 17,499 spectators. One reason for this was the lack of star players. The Texans' playful talent was so bad that they gave up Les Richter drafting rights for eleven players to the Los Angeles Rams before the season started . However, none of the eleven had any significant influence. Another reason was the rejection of the team by the population, as owner Connell Miller did not share the racist worldview of the Texans and also signed black players.

After the eighth game day, however, the franchise ran out of money, which is why it was returned to the league. The players then trained in Hershey , Pennsylvania and played their home games in Akron , Ohio . On November 27, 1952 they won on Thanksgiving after nine defeats in a row against the Chicago Bears with 27:23 their first game. The final two games were lost again, however, so that the team ended their only season with a 1-11 record. After that season, the Texans gave up game operations, making them the last NFL team to cease playing. Many Texans players were hired by the Baltimore Colts , founded in 1953, but they have no official relationship with the Texans.

The Texans name was adopted in 1960 for a new team, now the Kansas City Chiefs .
