The Cotton Bowl Stadium is a traditional sports facility opened in 1932 in Fair Park in Dallas . It is equipped with natural grass and holds 92,100 spectators. The name is a play on the word cotton boll (seed pod of cotton).
A number of sports teams were and are based here:
- SMU Mustangs ( NCAA ) College Football
 - Dallas Cowboys ( NFL ; 1960-1970) professional football
 - Dallas Texans (NFL; 1952) professional football
 - Kansas City Chiefs (as Dallas Texans) ( AFL ; 1960–1962) professional football
 - Dallas Tornado (NASL; 1967–1968) football
 - FC Dallas (Dallas Burn to 2005) ( MLS ; 1996–2002, 2004–2005) football
 
Some games of the soccer world championship 1994 were played here. Furthermore, the Cotton Bowl trophy in college football is fought here every year . The annual Red River Rivalry between the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Oklahoma , which is one of the biggest rivalries in US sport , also takes place here.
The stadium was last renovated in 2008, increasing the audience capacity from 76,000 to 92,100.
