Gotthard Karl Ludwig Heinrich Graf von der Recke von Volmerstein (born on August 26, 1785 at Haus Overdyck ; died on October 23, 1857 in Berlin ) was a Prussian administrative officer and district administrator for the Bochum district .

Life

origin

The Recke family belonged to the Westphalian nobility of the county of Mark . On December 20, 1817, the Prussian king gave the Gotthard branch under the current name of von der Recke von Volmerstein the status of count . His parents were Philipp Heinrich Christian Graf von der Recke von Volmerstein (1751-1840) and his wife Luise Freiin von der Recke († April 16, 1836). Adalbert Graf von der Recke von Volmerstein was a younger brother.

Education and career

Gotthard von der Recke joined the Leib-Hussar Regiment as a cornet after attending the Joachimsthaler Gymnasium in Berlin in 1804 . After the peace of Tilsit , which reduced Prussia to a rump state, he joined the ducal Bergische lancier regiment in 1808 and took part in Napoleon's campaigns against Austria, Spain and Russia (see timeline ). In 1813, Napoleon suffered the decisive defeat in the Battle of Leipzig , von der Recke returned to the Prussian Army as Rittmeister of the 11th Hussar Regiment . With the rank of major , he was discharged from military service in 1817 , the same year that his family was elevated to the rank of count.

On July 3, 1822, the Royal Prussian Government in Arnsberg issued Gotthard Graf von der Recke von Volmerstein an examination certificate, according to which he was "qualified to hold a district office". Ten years later he was elected the first candidate for the reoccupation of the district office in Bochum with a voting ratio of 12 to 9 to 1. After his definitive appointment on May 10, 1832, he was responsible for this administration of the district for a good two decades until he was discharged from civil service on December 6, 1852.

From 1837 to 1841 he was a member of the provincial parliament of the province of Westphalia for the knighthood in the constituency of Mark . In 1843 and 1845 he took part in the state parliament as a representative of Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein.

Gotthard von der Recke von Volmerstein was a member of the Order of St. John .

social commitment

In 1819 he set up the Haus Overdyck rescue facility at the side of his brother Adalbert , which had set itself the task of helping children and young people who were victims of the Napoleonic campaigns in particular. Furthermore, Gotthard von der Recke von Volmerstein was at the side of the industrialist Friedrich Harkort in 1844 co-founder of the association for the German elementary school and for the dissemination of non-profit knowledge .

Von der Recke was awarded the Red Eagle Order 4th class and the character of a Privy Councilor from the highest authority .

The Protestant Gotthard Graf von der Recke von Volmerstein married Karoline Wilhelmine Amalie Luise Jakobine Elise Princess zu Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda on November 21, 1817 in Rheda (born June 4, 1792 at Rheda Castle ; died December 7, 1876 there), a daughter of the ruling landlord Emil Fürst von Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda and his wife, Agnes Christiane Albertine Princess zu Sayn-Wittgenstein. The Recke couple had two sons and a daughter. Gotthard Graf von der Recke von Volmerstein was the owner of several manors, including in the Bochum district.
