Before making his debut with the Rams in 1954, he joined the US Army for two years . There the Rams had to admit defeat to the Cleveland Browns with 38:14. Richter could not prevent the defeat of his team with a sack against quarterback Otto Graham . From 1957 Richter was team captain of the defense. In 1962 he played at short notice due to an injury to Art Hunter as a center for his team. After nine years playing with the Rams, he ended his career in 1962.
