Robert Stanton "Bob" Waterfield (born July 26, 1920 in Elmira , New York , † March 25, 1983 in Burbank , California ) was an American American football player and coach. He played, among other things, quarterback in the National Football League (NFL).

career

Waterfield joined the University of California, Los Angeles after graduating from high school . In 1943 he was able to win the championship of the Pacific Coast Conference with his team . In 1944 , he was drawn 42nd by the Cleveland Rams in the fifth round of the NFL Draft . The following year he moved with the team to Los Angeles . After the 1952 season, he ended his playing career.

With the Rams, Waterfield won the NFL championship twice . In 1945 the Washington Redskins were beaten in the NFL final with 15:14, in 1951 the Cleveland Browns were defeated with 24:17. In the first game Waterfield was able to throw two touchdown passes, in the second game the Rams used Norm Van Brocklin as quarterback, Waterfield, who was also a good kicker and punter , scored a field goal .

In 1945 and 1946, Waterfield threw the most touchdowns of all NFL quarterbacks, in total he was able to achieve 97 touchdowns through passes and 13 touchdowns himself in the regular season . He also has 60 field goals scored.

After his playing career, Waterfield was head coach for the Rams from 1960 to 1962 . However, he was never able to build on his successes as a coach.

family

Waterfield was married to the movie star Jane Russell , whom he had already met at school. The marriage lasted from 1943 to 1967 and was divorced. The couple adopted three children. Waterfield died of respiratory failure . His body was cremated and the ashes scattered in Caliente , California.

Honors

Waterfield is a member of the NFL 1940s All-Decade Team and the Pro Football Hall of Fame . In 1945 he became an MVP for the NFL season. He was elected all-pro four times and played twice in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. His shirt number 7 is no longer assigned by the Rams.
