Buford Garfield "Baby" Ray (born September 30, 1914 in Una , Tennessee , USA , † January 21, 1986 in Nashville , Tennessee) was an American American football player . He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Green Bay Packers as a tackle.

Player career

College career

Buford Ray attended high school in Nashville , then studied at Vanderbilt University , where he played American football . As was usual for the time, he played for the Vanderbilt Commodores both on defense and offense . He ran as a tackle in both parts of the team. In 1937 he served as the Commodores' deputy team captain . From his college he was honored for his athletic achievements in the years 1935 to 1937.

Professional career

Without having been drawn in an NFL draft , he joined the Green Bay Packers as a free agent . The team's head coach was Curly Lambeau . The Packers were a top team and had numerous all-star players such as Arnie Herber , Clarke Hinkle and Cecil Isbell in their ranks. Along with Russ Letlow and Bill Lee played Ray in the offensive line as a tackle .

Ray already moved into the NFL championship game in his rookie year , which was lost to the New York Giants at 23:17. In 1939 Ray then won his first championship title. This time the Giants were beaten 27-0. In 1941, Ray moved into the championship game for the third time with his team. The Chicago Bears won 33:14. Then in 1944 Ray won his second title. Again the Giants were defeated by the team from Green Bay with 14: 7. After 11 years with the Packers, Ray ended his playing career in 1948.

Coaching career

Buford Ray became an assistant coach at his old college after his playing career . In 1955, his team won the Gator Bowl - it was the first time the Commodores had won a bowl game . He was also a full-time scout for this team. Baby Ray later returned to the Green Bay Packers and worked there as a human resources officer and scout until his death. Ray is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Nashville , Tennessee.

Honors

Ray once played in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the season's best players. He was voted All-Pro four times . He is a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame , the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, and the NFL 1940s All-Decade Team .
