Leonard "Len" Alonzo Younce (* 8. January 1917 in Dayton , Oregon ; † 26. March 2000 in Enterprise , Oregon) was an American Football player . He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the New York Giants .
Player career
College career
Len Younce visited in Portland the high school . After graduating from school, he studied at Oregon State University from 1938 to 1940 . There he played American football in various positions. In 1940, Younce and his team moved to the Pineapple Bowl . In the game, the University of Hawaii could be defeated 39: 6.
Professional career
In 1941, Younce was by the by head coach Steve Owen trained New York Giants came 67th in the eighth round drafted . Younce was used as a player in the offensive line , as a linebacker , but also as a punter and kicker . In 1944, Younce gained 1941 yards with 48 punts . This was the league's best performance this year. Younce moved with the Giants a total of four times in the NFL championship game . The New York City team couldn't win any of the games. In 1941 the Giants had to admit defeat to the Chicago Bears 37: 9. In 1943 there was a 28-0 defeat against the Washington Redskins . The following year, the Green Bay Packers retained the upper hand over the Giants at 14: 7, although Younce was able to intercept a pass from the opposing quarterback in the game . In 1945 he had to interrupt his career because of his military service in the US Army . He served as a corporal in the army .
In 1946 he returned to the Giants and reached the NFL final again with his team. Again the Bears were the final opponents and the Giants lost again with 24:14. After the 1948 season, Younce ended his playing career.
Coaching career
Younce worked after his playing career from 1949 to 1954 as an assistant coach at his old college. From 1960 to 1962 he worked in the same position with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and then moved to the Edmonton Eskimos until 1965 . Both teams play in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Until he retired in 1992, he coached various high school football teams. Len Younce died on March 26, 2000 and is buried in Willamette National Cemetery , Portland.
Honors
Younce has been voted All-Pro six times . He is a member of the NFL 1940s All-Decade Team , the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, and his college Sports Hall of Fame.
