Victor Wilson Sears (born March 14, 1918 in Ashwood , Oregon , USA , † September 21, 2006 in Winston-Salem , North Carolina ), nickname : Old Smoothie , was an American football player . He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Philadelphia Eagles .
Player career
College career
Vic Sears graduated from Oregon State University , where he played as a tackle American football. Because of his athletic achievements, he was voted All American in 1940 . In the same year he played with his team in the Pineapple Bowl against the University of Hawaii . His team won the game 39: 6.
Professional career
In 1941, Sears was drafted 33rd by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round . Sears was given to the Eagles immediately afterwards. In the Eagles, who were trained by Greasy Neale , he received working time in the offensive line as a tackle, but was also used in the defensive line . In 1943, the Eagles had to join forces with the Steelers due to a lack of players caused by World War II . In the following years the Eagles managed to develop into a top team. They managed to sign star players like Pete Pihos , Jack Ferrante and Steve Van Buren . Sears has been responsible for protecting his own quarterback since the beginning of his professional career and also took on the task of blocking the way for his own running backs into the opposing end zone.
The 1944 season Sears had to sit out completely due to an injury. But he found connection to the team again the next year. In the game year 1947 he could only accumulate in seven games due to a stomach ulcer .
In 1948 Sears was able to win the NFL championship with his team . They won the game against the Chicago Cardinals 7-0. The following year Vic Sears was able to win his second title. This time the Los Angeles Rams were defeated 14-0.
After the 1952 season, Sears wanted to end his career, but was persuaded by the Eagles to add another season. He finally retired in 1953.
Honors
Sears has been voted All Pro five times . He is a member of the NFL 1940s All-Decade Team , the Oregon State University Sports Hall of Fame, and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame .

Sears was cremated after his death and the ashes scattered around his property in Holicong , Pennsylvania .
