Jack Anthony Ferrante (* 9. March 1916 in Camden , New Jersey ; † 24. November 2006 in Yardley , Pennsylvania ) Nickname : Black Jack , was an American American football player and trainer. He played, among other things, as an end in the National Football League (NFL) with the Philadelphia Eagles .

Player career

Greasy Neale

Jack Ferrante did not start his playing career in high school and never went to college . After his family moved from New Jersey to Philadelphia , he worked in a supermarket and from 1934 played on clay courts with lower-class football teams. In 1939 he was given the opportunity to take part in a trial training session from the Eagles, who were trained by Bert Bell , but where he did not know how to convince. Instead, he was signed to a farm team from the Eagles, earning him a salary of $ 7 per game. In 1941 he was invited again to the Eagles training camp. After he had played three games for the Philadelphia team, he was sent back to the farm team because he could not convince. Greasy Neale , the Eagles' new coach, kept an eye on him. In 1944, players were in short supply due to World War II and Neale brought Ferrante back to the Eagles.

Al Wistert

That decision was to be a godsend for Ferrante and for the Eagles, who grew to become one of the best football teams of the 1940s. Within a few years, the Eagles managed to significantly strengthen the squad with star players such as Pete Pihos , Steve Van Buren or Bucko Kilroy . Players like Vic Sears or Al Wistert , who were already under contract with the Eagles, developed into top performers.

In 1947 Ferrante moved with his team for the first time in the NFL championship game , but where they were defeated by the Chicago Cardinals with 28:21. Ferrante was able to catch eight passes for a gain of 73 yards .

In 1948 Jack Ferrante won his first NFL championship. Again the Cardinals were the opponent - this time however they were defeated by the Eagles 7-0. The following year, the Eagles moved into the final again and Ferrante won his second NFL title. The Philadelphia team beat the Los Angeles Rams 14-0 after one season with 11 wins after a loss in the NFL final .

After the 1950 season, Jack Ferrante ended his career after the Eagles failed to meet his salary demands and wanted him to join the Detroit Lions .

Honors

Jack Ferrante has been voted All-Pro twice . He is a member of the NFL 1940s All-Decade Team and the Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame .
