Willard Russell Letlow (born October 5, 1913 in Dinuba , California , USA ; † October 12, 1987 in San Luis Obispo , California), nickname : King Kong , was an American football player . He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Green Bay Packers on the offensive line .
Player career
College career
Russ Letlow attended high school in Taft , California . Even in high school he played American football and was active as a track and field athlete and baseball player. Because of his athletic achievements in football, he was elected to the league selection. After graduating from high school, he studied at the University of San Francisco , where he played football for the USF Dons . In 1936, he became the College - all-star invited -Game. His team played against the Detroit Lions 7-7. He also took part in the East-West Shrine Game , another selection game.
Professional career
He was signed in the first round in 1936 in 7th place in the NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers . Letlow played in the team trained by Curly Lambeau as both guard and offensive tackle . Letlow was responsible for protecting Arnie Herber and later for protecting Cecil Isbell , who played as quarterbacks for the Packers. He was also used as a blocker by running back Clarke Hinkle . In 1936 the Packers were able to move into the NFL championship game after a season with 10 won out of 12 games and defeat the Boston Redskins 21: 6.
In 1938 the Packers lost in the final against the New York Giants with 23:17. In the 1939 season , Letlow's team won nine of 11 games and also won the final against the Giants 27-0.
In 1941 the team from Green Bay was able to make 10 of 11 games victorious, but the team failed in the championship semi-final game at the Chicago Bears with 33:14. After the 1942 season , Letlow had to do his military service in the US Navy , but played there American football for a naval team. After another year with the Packers, Letlow ended his career in 1946 .
After the career
Russell Letlow moved to Delano , California and became a successful gas business executive. He was married and had three children. His ashes were at sea buried .
Honors
Letlow played twice in the Pro Bowl , the season finale game of the best players in a game round. He has been elected all-pro four times and is a member of the NFL 1930s All-Decade Team , The Bob Elias Kern County Sports Hall of Fame , his college hall of fame , and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame .
