Gaynell Charles "Gus" Tinsley (born February 1, 1913 in Ruple , Louisiana , † July 24, 2002 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana) was an American American football player and coach.
Player career
Tinsley attended in Haynesville , the High School and then studied from 1934 to 1936 at the Louisiana State University . There he played college football and basketball while studying . He was team captain in both sports . In 1935 and 1936 he moved into the Sugar Bowl with his football team . Both games were lost. Because of his achievements, he was voted All-American in both years . In 1937 he played in the college all-star game and scored the only points in his team's victory. He had caught a touchdown pass from Sammy Baugh to make it 6-0. In 1937, Tinsley was drafted 12th by the Chicago Cardinals in the second round . In his rookie year , Tinsley set several NFL season records - among other things, he caught passes for a space gain of 675 yards . In 1938 he caught 41 passes in the season, surpassing Don Hutson's performance by nine pass catches. His two pass catches over 97 and 98 yards are still in the NFL record books today. After only three seasons with the Cardinals, Tinsley ended his playing career.
Coaching career
After finishing his playing career, Tinsley did his military service in the US Navy . He then briefly coached a high school team and then became an assistant coach at his old college . In 1948 he took over the position of head coach , which he held until 1954. In 1955 he was released. Tinsley had only won 50% of his team's games. The college continued to pay him his contracted annual salary for two years. Gus Tinsley was buried in the Greenoaks Memorial Park in Baton Rouge.
Honors
Tinsley was voted All-Pro twice and played in a Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame , Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame , his college hall of fame , and the NFL 1930s All-Decade Team .
