George Peter Svendsen, Junior (born March 22, 1913 in Minneapolis , Minnesota , USA ; † August 6, 1995 , ibid) was an American football and basketball player . He played football in the National Football League (NFL) with the Green Bay Packers .

Player career

College career

Svendsen attended high school in the Minneapolis suburb . He studied at Oregon State University and then moved to the University of Minnesota , where he played football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers . In 1934 and 1935 his team remained undefeated and won eight games each. The Minnesota Golden Gophers were then declared national college champions by the US sports press.

Professional career

George Svendsen joined the Green Bay Packers in 1935 , who were trained by Curly Lambeau . The Packers were a team with numerous well-known players, such as the later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Walt Kiesling , John McNally or the quarterback Arnie Herber .

Svendsen played in the team's offense as the center and had the task of protecting his own quarterback and blocking the way into the end zone for Halfback McNally . He also played alongside Clarke Hinkle , who was also used in offense and defense , as a linebacker in the team's defense. In 1936 the Packers were able to win 11 of their 13 games and defeated the Chicago Bears 21: 6 in the NFL championship game . In 1937 his brother Bud Svendsen was also under contract with the Packers. After the regular season 1938 Svendsen and his team had to admit defeat to the New York Giants with 23:17 in the final. Svendsen then sat out for two years to coach a football team at a high school in Wisconsin . He also played in 1937 and 1938 with the Oshkosh All-Stars , a professional basketball team of the National Basketball League .

In 1940 he returned to Green Bay with the Packers. In the game year 1941 , Svendsen's team once again made it into the final. The game was lost against the Bears with 33:14. During World War II he served in the US Navy and served on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific War , but also played on a military football team, the Iowa Seahawks . He did not continue his professional career after the war.

After the career

After the war, George Svendsen returned to football and became an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota in his native Minneapolis. He later worked as a scout for the San Francisco 49ers . He also commented on football games on local radio and television stations and, together with his brother Bud, continued his father's electrical company. Svendsen was married and lived in Golden Valley . He is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Honors

Svendsen was once voted All-Pro . He is a member of the NFL 1930s All-Decade Team and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame .
