Daniel "Dan / Danny" John Fortmann (* 11. April 1916 in Pearl River , New York ; † 23. May 1995 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American American football poker players and surgeon . He played seven years in the National Football League (NFL) for the Chicago Bears .
Player career
college
Fortmann studied at Colgate University . He plays college football with the Colgate Raiders as a guard . In his first year of study in 1933, he was already a starter . He remained a regular player until the end of his studies.
professional
Many teams in the NFL thought Fortmann was too small and too light. He was therefore selected in 1936 by the Chicago Bears only in the ninth and final round in 78th place in the NFL Draft . He was paid $ 110 per game. In his first year he was used by his trainer George Halas as a starter on the offensive line . He became a dominant player on the Chicago team . Together with the later member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Joe Stydahar , who ran up as a tackle , he formed the left side of the offensive line of the Bears. Both made a significant contribution to the team's success. In 1937, the Bears had to defeat the Washington Redskins in the list of NFL champions with 28:21. In 1940 the Bears were able to return the favor for this failure. They beat the Redskins 73-0. In 1941 they won the championship again, prevailing against the New York Giants with 37: 9. Fortmann celebrated the third championship in 1943. Again the Redskins were defeated - this time with 41:21. Fortmann ended his career in 1943. He's still the youngest player to ever sign with the Bears.
Honors
Fortmann is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , College Football Hall of Fame, and the NFL 1930s All-Decade Team . He was elected eight times for All-Pro (1 + 2 team) and in three Pro Bowls .
Off the field
Fortmann did his military service in the US Navy from 1943 . During his time as a professional player, he studied medicine at the University of Chicago School of Medicine and, after completing his military service, settled in Los Angeles as a surgeon . From 1947 to 1963 he was a team doctor for the Los Angeles Rams . He spent the last years of his life in a nursing home. His final resting place is not known.
