college
Covert played college football at the University of Pittsburgh . First used in the defensive line , he completed all games of the 1978 season as a freshman . He missed the following season completely due to a shoulder injury. In the spring of 1980 he moved to the position of offensive tackle and was an undisputed starter for the next three seasons. In his senior year, he didn't allow a single sack and became an All-American . In 2003 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame .
NFL
Covert was selected sixth by the Chicago Bears in the First Round of the 1983 NFL Draft . The Bears were known for their good defense at the time, while the offense only ranked 22nd in the league. From head coach Mike Ditka , who had also played college football at the University of Pittsburgh in the late 1950s, Covert was immediately named a starter to spare the back of quarterback Jim McMahon , who had only been drafted the previous year . The Bears' offense increased significantly and in 1985 reached second place in the league. The running game in particular became a great strength: in 1982 only on rank 18, the Bears advanced to the undisputed front-runner in this category from 1983 to 1986. Even after that, Covert got good placements: In 1988 the Bears running game was the third best in the league, in 1989 and 1990 the second best.
Over the decade, Covert competed in the Pro Bowl twice. In the 1985 season he was an elementary member of the team that lost only one game in the regular season and entered the Super Bowl in the subsequent Divisional Playoffs and Conference Championships without a single point . In Super Bowl XX , Covert celebrated a never-endangered 46:10 victory with the Bears against the New England Patriots . In 1990, he was elected to the 1980s NFL All Decade team .
In 2020, Covert was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
